Moonlit Access specializes in transforming English audio and video content into accessible experiences through American Sign Language (ASL), bridging the gap between hearing-centered media and the Deaf community.
I'm JoAnn Benfield, the founder of Moonlit Access. I launched the company in 2025 to address the growing need for authentic ASL access across social media, health and wellness, education, the arts, audiobooks, and podcasts.
As a Deaf person with residual hearing, my journey to create Moonlit Access is deeply personal. For years, I saw firsthand the pressing need for ASL access, both as a consumer and professionally; through nearly two decades as an educator and performer, as well as over a decade as an interpreter. While I was passionate about making a difference, I struggled to find a starting point. Everything changed when my sister asked a simple but powerful question: "Is there an ASL version of Audible books?" There isn't. That single moment solidified my purpose and gave me the direction I needed.
With roots in interpreting, translation, education, and performing arts, I bring more than technical skill. As someone with Deaf heritage and residual hearing, I offer a unique dual perspective, blending cultural fluency with a sharp ear for tone, rhythm, emotion, and intention. The result: ASL interpretations and translations that are more accurate, resonant, and deeply connected.
My guiding principle is simple: to provide access that is just as expressive, immersive, and inclusive as the original message, regardless of the content's platform.
